Trump agrees to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on denuclearization.

If I am Kim, I dangle the Nobel Prize in front of the president. Just like Obama's. Only better since Trump can end a war. All he has to do is spend the next three years moving those few American troops off the Korean Peninsula. Look at the money saved! Even Xi will tell him how great an idea that would be. Hell, Kim can even promise (scouts honor) to give up his nuclear program. A nuke free Korea and an end to 68 year war.

Commentators have been flummoxed a bit. MSNBC and CNN went positive for Trump initially but I think they are recovering, along the lines of my initial reaction in this thread.
Other commentators are suggesting that Trump's tough talk ("unhinged," it was called, including the "Rocket Man" nickname) was responsible.Originally posted by Newman View PostI'm not keen on this at first blush...
[S]uch a meeting itself is a huge "win" for Kim Jong-un, who gets to elevate himself as a peer to the world's superpower.
This morning I remembered another thread here, Rods from God, which I'd like to think played a role:
On October 10, an earthquake struck North Korea's underground nuclear program, killing 200 workers.
Today, another earthquake struck.
Evidence shows that this may be the result of the Rods from God program -- a tungsten rod fired to Earth from space.Getting such heavy loads into space is a challenge, a "heavy lift" literally. Another Rocket Man, Elon Musk, might be up to the task, which would be great since it would herald a new age of Musketry. The "rods from god" idea was a bundle of telephone-pole-size (20 feet long, 1 foot in diameter) tungsten rods, dropped from orbit, reaching a speed of up to 10 times the speed of sound.
The rod itself would penetrate hundreds of feet into the Earth, destroying any potential hardened bunkers or secret underground sites. More than that, when the rod hits, the explosion would be on par with the magnitude of a ground-penetrating nuclear weapon — but with no fallout.
Such a weapon could destroy a target with 15 minutes' notice.- "I'm a hell of a lot smarter than most of you guys." — Joe Biden, at Jesse Jackson's funeral, March 2026.

Really? I've heard just the opposite in that North Korea has wanted direct talks with the United States president for quite some time.Originally posted by Newman View PostOther commentators are suggesting that Trump's tough talk ("unhinged," it was called, including the "Rocket Man" nickname) was responsible.
The change is on our side of the table, not North Korea's.“One day, when it's safe, when there's no personal downside to calling a thing what it is, when it's too late to hold anyone accountable, everyone will have always been against this.”

Perhaps they'll spend time playing Battleship. lol.
If Trump can actually get him to agree to denuclearization, then that would be a really good thing. I know a lot of liberals have been afraid he'd start a nuclear war by running his mouth on twitter and I haven't always had faith in him myself on this subject, but this is good progress.

Not CNN. They were actually saying tough talk from Trump brought NK to the meeting. Haven't watched MSNBC though.Originally posted by Billy Jingo View PostReally? I've heard just the opposite in that North Korea has wanted direct talks with the United States president for quite some time.

True. I'm not entirely resolved to it yet.Originally posted by Billy Jingo View PostReally? I've heard just the opposite in that North Korea has wanted direct talks with the United States president for quite some time.

(CNN)It "came like a miracle" according to South Korea's President, but the sudden blush of goodwill between US President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un may have its roots in the insults they've traded.
Now everyone's asking the question -- has Trump confounded the pundits, has his bombast finally landed a knockout blow, or at the very least stunned his opponent into agreeing a face-to-face meeting? Not where I breathe, but where I love, I live...

Whether or not anything productive comes of this, it's obviously a better start than we've seen in a long time.
One thing I think that most pundits (on either side) miss is that personal relationships do strongly influence politics on every level. People are.....people. We do form relationships and these relationships do inform our opinions and actions.
If Kim meets and likes Trump and if Kim is essentially just super interested in his global image, then this could work out great. Trump has a genuine talent for making his rivals into semi-friends. Like him or loath him, he does do this very well.
Let's face it, despite being the most murderous, stupid, and oppressive regime we have today that is not in Africa or the Middle East, even extremely progressive activists have zero interest in "liberating" the millions dying of starvation, weather, and police/military brutality in North Korea. None. Zip. Progressives have no side here because the population is Asian and therefore essentially "white".
If Trump can turn this fat fuck's attention to something beyond nuking Japan, all of us who are not living in North Korea will be better off."Alexa, slaughter the fatted calf."
