White House fence-jumper made it far deeper into building than previously known

Security reviewed after fence-jumper enters White House

The Secret Service is under scrutiny after a man scaled the White House fence and made it all the way into the East Room.

By Carol D. Leonnig September 29 at 4:22 PM

The man who jumped the White House fence this month and sprinted through the front door made it much farther into the building than previously known, overpowering one Secret Service officer and running through much of the main floor, according to three people familiar with the incident.

An alarm box near the front entrance of the White House designed to alert guards to an intruder had been muted at what officers believed was a request of the usher’s office, said a Secret Service official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The officer posted inside the front door appeared to be delayed in learning that the intruder, Omar Gonzalez, was about to burst through. Officers are trained that, upon learning of an intruder on the grounds — often through the alarm boxes posted around the property — they must immediately lock the front door.

After barreling past the guard immediately inside the door, Gonzalez, who was carrying a knife, dashed past the stairway leading a half-flight up to the first family’s living quarters. He then ran into the 80-foot-long East Room, an ornate space often used for receptions or presidential addresses.

Gonzalez was tackled by a counterassault agent at the far southern end of the East Room. The intruder reached the doorway to the Green Room, a parlor overlooking the South Lawn with artwork and antique furniture, according to three people familiar with the incident.

    Whoa!

That's not good at all. What's going on with the lack of discipline in the Secret Service?

Scary. I thought I'd heard earlier that the Obama's were not in residence at the time. I hope not. Otherwise this is even worse than what us written. If the pres is in residence and this happens the intruder should be shot on sight.

I'm amazed and disappointed that he wasn't regardless of the Obamas' location. This is a huge national security risk.

My understanding is that the First Family had left 15 minutes prior to this. However, this is an area where a large number of political notables have business and feel secure so not good.

While I agree with that I'm just saying that if he is in residence it is even worse if there is any attempt not to shoot to kill. Having the ores assassinated in his own home is about the worst thing I can think of.

              True.

Here's where this is really bad: Right now there are people intent on killing the President. They now know that there is an exploitable vulnerability, a lack of discipline, a breakdown in control, and a policy of not killing someone that broke into the White House. That is not good. It takes years of training to produce a reflex of shooting to kill at first encounter and it takes years of training to undo that reflex. The criminal was tackled, not shot. He should have been shot.

Now that those people that want to kill the President know the vulnerability and the new protocol, it will be exploited. I hope the Secret Service can address this major issue fast enough.

It's a very disturbing trend, following on the heels of the reports that the SS was slow (by days) realizing the White House had been hit by seven bullets that a cray cray shot a while back. Obama wasn't there, but one of his daughters was, along with her grandmother. Scary stuff.

There hasn't been any kind of concrete reporting on why exactly these shortfalls keep happening, but the fingers seem to be slowly pointing towards the removal of the Secret Service from the Dept. of Treasury oversight to being folded in to Homeland Security.

                  Now, that's an interesting angle.

I was thinking the same thing. It seems strange and counterintuitive to me that a para-military unit would have a breakdown in discipline simply by moving from one Cabinet boss to another, but the Department of Homeland Security is a terrible mishmash of bureaucratic lunacy.

I suspect it's because the Secret Service was always it's own operating fiefdom and merely had authority and appropriations from Treasury while being left to do its job and now it's being micromanaged.

No matter how anybody feels about this Administration, nobody wants to see the Delaware Doofus in the White House. Nobody.
