FREDDY GRAY HAD SPINE SURGERY JUST ONE WEEK BEFORE ARREST

CONFIRMED: Court records show Freddie Gray was receiving a structured settlement from Allstate Insurance and attempted to convert it into one lump sum in early March

    ———————————————————————————————————————————–

EXCLUSIVE: The Fourth Estate has learned that Freddy Gray’s life-ending injuries to his spine may have possibly been the result of spinal and neck surgery that he allegedly received a week before he was arrested, not from rough excessively rough treatment or abuse from police.

The Fourth Estate has contacted sources who allege that Freddy Gray received spinal and neck surgery a week before we was arrested, and was allegedly receiving a large structured settlement from Allstate Insurance. The surgery is allegedly related to a car accident in which Gray was involved.

Sources allege that Gray also attempted to refinance his structured settlement into one lump sum payment through Peachtree Funding.

It's LiveLeak so consider the source. That certainly would explain this:

Spinal injuries such as those that led to Freddie Gray's death while in police custody require "significant force" akin to the impact from a car accident and can fatally impair the body's ability to regulate blood flow and breathing, according to medical experts.

    ...

Gray's family has said he underwent surgery at Maryland Shock Trauma Center for three fractured neck vertebrae and a crushed voice box — injuries doctors said are more common among the elderly or victims of high-speed crashes.

Too little, too late; the city has already convicted the police department as guilty in his death.

Thanks for posting that. I didn't think the police caused those injuries. I do think there still should be charges for negligence. There's no excuse in having denied Gray treatment or to deny him his inhaler.

I don't know if this had anything to do with his death but I do know that the BFF was strictly forbidden from all physical activity outside the house for several weeks after her spine surgery. She could walk at therapy with a walker during the first week or two, she could walk from one room to another, and she could dress herself. She could not lift anything over 3 pounds, bend over, or go any distance without a supportive aid. I'm pretty sure they didn't want her to run any distance.

The reasoning was that repairs made to her spine needed to fill in with strong bone before any major stress. If she fell or lurched, she could destroy the new bone and mess up the hardware.

I'm kinda impressed the guy felt good enough to get out there and run from the cops.

If he had spinal surgery, then any cuffing and stuffing would mess him up but the running would really be a problem.

              Hmmmm....

Attorney just denied this on Hannity. It will be interesting to see what happens with this. In all of these recent cases, the family mouthpieces have had to back-pedal on these things after swearing up and down that the deceased was pure as the driven snow, e.g. Benjamin Chump getting forced to back up to a "no comment" on Michael Brown having a felony record after the Missouri courts admitted that, in fact, Brown did have a felony record and Chump and the other usual suspects had spent days, weeks insisting that he had never been arrested at all.

Well, the plot may be thinning.

It looks like this structured settlement may be the result of a 2010 lead paint settlement in which the landlord/property owner was insured under an umbrella policy with Allstate.

They claim to have other sources who say that Gray had surgery, so it's possible that he was seeking this lump sum to make some sort of payment on a surgery, but without more corroboration, I don't think that we can draw a straight line between this action between Peachtree and Allstate and a pre-existing spinal injury. Basically, the folks claiming this really need to come forward with some solid sources in order for this to really have any legs.

Interesting. This might be all bullshit since the video shows that he was able to stand on his own which doesn't look good for the police.

I have no direct experience With Baltimore PD, and if I did, it would have been over 30 years ago. Back when I was in high school and, by report, well before that, neighboring Prince George's County, MD police were well known for certain types of suspects falling down a flight of stairs at the station. To the best of my knowledge, no one ever proved the cops were pushing arrestees down the stairs (in cuffs), but a fair number of them looked much worse in their booking photos than they did when they were arrested.

I seriously doubt that the PG County force was the only one with this kind of thing happening.

That said, I plan to wait until things simmer down and hard evidence is available. I heard a report on CNN that the autopsy showed no signs of battery at all, and that the only sign of trauma was the broken spine. If that's true, it makes it more likely that Gray had some pre-existing spinal defect that broke under stress that would not have injured a person with a normal spine. Like being physically tossed into the paddy wagon when he wouldn't go on his own (as the video appears to show), something that probably does not constitute excessive force.

There are lots of improbable stories floating around. HRH says she heard on some news source that his spine was broken in 6 or 8 places. That sounds unlikely, unless there were cops in the paddy wagon jumping on Gray's back, which is inconsistent with the reported autopsy findings. She also saw photos purported to be Gray, in which his face was badly bruised and swollen. That, too, seems inconsistent with the autopsy findings reported on CNN.

At this point, I think rational people can only wait until all the evidence is in. Outside law enforcement is already involved, which is good; it serves no one if there's suspicion of a cover-up. My message to Baltimore, to the Maryland State Police and to any federal agencise involved is this: Do it right, do it in the open, and make all findings public, whether good, bad or incidental. Then, if there's something rotten in Baltimore, fix it. Now.

Mildred released a statement on the 40th anniversary of the ruling in 2007: 'I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, Black or white, young or old, gay or straight, seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.'." - Mildred Loving (Loving v. Virginia)

Well, the surgery-prior-to-arrest part may or may not be questionable, but there's this from the WaPo, and apparently backed up by actual sworn affadavits.

A prisoner sharing a police transport van with Freddie Gray told investigators that he could hear Gray “banging against the walls” of the vehicle and believed that he “was intentionally trying to injure himself,” according to a police document obtained by The Washington Post.

The prisoner, who is currently in jail, was separated from Gray by a metal partition and could not see him. His statement is contained in an application for a search warrant, which is sealed by the court.

                          [....]

[Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony W.] Batts has said officers violated policy by failing to properly restrain Gray. But the president of the Baltimore police union noted that the policy mandating seat belts took effect April 3 and was e-mailed to officers as part of a package of five policy changes on April 9, three days before Gray was arrested.

I almost always hate public sector unions and I still think that they are a net negative but I gotta say that this is a good thing - someone going to bat for the police officers that has the weight to make sure these facts are considered.
