Originally reported a few days ago, the outlines of this scheme and reaction have become more clear. Over the last several weeks, from late July, workers at the Chicago facility began taking advantage of a glitch that enabled them to borrow $3,000 from the company and then have the loan vanish from the company's records with just a $50 payment. There was a "ringleader" who charged "$200-$300 [per] to help employees obtain the medical loans and have them wiped from the company's records."
Target fires hundreds of employees over scheme that may have lost the company 'millions' (Niti Majethia, Daily Express on MSN)
The departure of "beauty retailer" Ulta seems completely irrelevant.
Well, this is a bit more than taking home a few paper clips from the office, folks.
The report says the warehouse feels "weirdly empty," and that Target is hiring in a frenzy.
--------------------------------------
Ulta's separation is mentioned frequently, but I've looked in vain for a connection. Ulta apparently is going because the Target brand has become "tarnished," i.e., profits dinged, I presume by their woke overreach a few years ago. That strikes me as odd because ULTA in my small experience was, in its stand-alone stores, an extremely effete and outré venue, with excellent and solicitous salespeople who were in virtual costumes of make-up and garb. One report mentioned that Ulta and Target joined forces shortly after Target's profits ballooned after it was named an "essential retailer" at the height of the covid market distortion. Perhaps these things go together.
But not the dumping of those involved with this fraudster wildfire. Kudos to Target for swift and clear action, and for NOT taking a conciliatory, counseling, type of approach at resolution.

Hundreds of Target workers have been fired from Little Village warehouse over a fraud involving the company's medical benefits program, prompting the company to begin a hiring spree. This comes after Target announced it was ending its partnership with beauty brand Ulta.
Employees were eligible for loans over $3,000 to cover medical costs. Current employees told Block Club that the employees who were fired found a flaw in the system that let them repay just $50 of the loan, with the rest of the balance disappearing from the company's records. It comes after the announcement a popular beauty retailer set to leave Target stores next year.

From late July into early August, an estimated 400 to 700 employees were let go over a two week span.
