    Cereal eaters

    Cereal eaters...what do you put in the bowl first....the cereal or the milk.

    I am of the unwavering opinion that if you put the milk in first you have psycho tendencies.

    splenda, then half-n-half, then shredded wheat. Rice Crispies get drizzled from the top.
    The year's at the spring
    And day's at the morn;
    Morning's at seven;
    The hill-side's dew-pearled;
    The lark's on the wing;
    The snail's on the thorn:
    God's in his heaven—
    All's right with the world!

      If it's cold cereal, cereal first, then barely enough milk to get it wet. Might have to stir it pretty well to spread the milk around.

      If it's cooked cereal, usually no milk at all. Or a very small amount of real cream.

        Dry cereal, usually shredded wheat, cereal then milk. Sometimes crush the shredded wheat prior to the milk.
        Cooked... oatmeal, milk, brown sugar, raisins, mix, let it set overnight, microwave.

              I don't eat cold cereal. But if I did, definitely cereal and then milk. And I would never drink the leftover milk from the cereal. And I would have to eat the cereal quickly before it gets sogged by the milk. And I don't want any floaty pieces of partial cereal in the spoon of cereal and milk. And it has to be eaten quickly enough that the milk doesn't lose its coldness. So yeah, that's why I don't eat cereal....I have a lot of rules about milk and it's just easier not to deal with it.

              As for oatmeal, I make the oatmeal and then might add a touch of cream or half and half.

                  It must be done in this order:

                  Fruit
                  Cereal
                  Milk

                  I have to eat the whole thing and all the milk too.

                    So if I were to eat that, I would have to put the fruit on last. And no way I'm drinking that milk afterwards! In college they had milk machines (refrigerated bladders of milk). While I never really drank white milk, I wouldn't dare even drink chocolate milk if the milk came from something like that. As a kid we only were permitted milk at dinner time. If my mother poured the milk into the glass and then called me to dinner I would not drink it. I couldn't trust that it wasn't refrigerator cold!

                      No cereal but oatmeal would go first, a drizzle of honey and a splash of half & half.
                      May we raise children who love the unloved things - the dandelion, the worm, the spiderlings.

                      And when they're grown and someone has to speak for those who have no voice,
                      may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things and be the one.

                        Well, I hated drinking milk, so that wasn't an issue, but I did put it on cereal back when I ate cereal, and I do put it in coffee. I use UHT milk, which doesn't turn unless it's left open for days.

                        But you didn't mix your peas into your mashed potatoes like any normal kid, so it's no surprise you're weird about milk. And cereal. And.... ok, everything.

                          I once got into a huge fight with the cafeteria lady about the fact that they didn't have chocolate milk. That I would drink, but not the white milk. The white milk cost 5 cents. The chocolate milk 10 cents. The orange drink was 15 cents. But if you got the platter, it was 50 cents and that included either white or chocolate milk. I got the platter, but took an orange drink. It should have been 65 cents (the cost of the platter, plus the upcharge of 15 cents for the orange drink which wasn't included). Instead she tried to charge me a la carte for everything, making it over a dollar. Keep in mind I made $3.35 an hour and only worked part time, since it was the school year. I was financially responsible for all my clothing and food purchases (outside of the home) so every bit of my approximately $50/week income counted for me (I was a senior in high school). I calmly explained to her that I was getting the platter, sans milk, since there was no chocolate milk and it should be .65. She told me that since I didn't take the milk, it was no longer a platter and I had to pay more. I told her I'd take the milk and throw it in the garbage, but that my family would be upset with me for wasting food, but I'd handle it that way if she insisted. Instead she told me it was too late and I'd have to pay the higher amount. I left the "platter" at her register and walked away. It was 2 weeks before school let out. It was the one and only time in 12 years my mother ever came to the school to complain about a worker. I enjoyed the show!

                            I eat cold cereal two days out of three, more or less, and put on more fruit than anyone I know. This morning is typical: Honeynut Cheerios (in the bowl first, per this thread), banana, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries. I use a serving dish. Sometimes add Craisins, especially on Raisin Bran, but that's just candy. If I'm losing weight I go to oatmeal, plain and simple. Shredded Wheat is good, but I'm lazy and get the bite sized variety.
