I think I've lost my mind

I've agreed to run a half marathon this year. What was I thinking?

That is hard core. You must be doing very well.

Not really. I’ve been toying with it and then a friend reached out, said he was toying with it and asked if I was in. He knows me. Asking me that was a straight up challenge that he knew I couldn’t resist. We always have brought out the competitive side of each other. So here we are. Two middle aged people running a half marathon some time this spring. I’m sure they’ll have medical professionals on site.

Not particularly. But I do well when I have a goal. I needed a goal so as to not stagnate with all this COVID bs. It gets me out of the house and office.

That's about 13 miles? If you can run 3 regularly, you can run 13 on occasion. Just pace yourself.

After a lifetime of running, my feet and ankles have rebelled. The damage is extensive. I haven’t been able to run regularly in a long time. I miss it.

yeah that’s what I’m hoping. I do run 3 regularly. Trying to make that 5 regularly. Part of training for the half is to force me to increase my Mike’s. Without a goal it’s hard to get out of my comfort zone.

I’m sorry about that. It does seem that running for life can really cause some injuries. It’s a shame because it can be such a healthy thing too. I have to assume you’ve run marathons.

We ran or rode our bikes flat out spontaneously as kids. I was a total terror and speed demon on roller skates, and I would skate for hours. I would run all over the empty lot where we played baseball and maul-ball. But I hated running in PE. Never saw the point of running around a track or schoolyard, especially since, in elementary school, we did it in the clothes we had to wear for the rest of the day, and in junior high and high school, we had to do it in those butt-ugly gym suits (and get our hair all sweaty, which meant looking like crap for the rest of the day). But as an adult, I really got into it, especially when it was social. I ran with a club in SF for years, until my back got really bad.

If it's not your thing, it's just not. Do what makes you feel good.

When I was a kid I enjoyed running, but only sprints, never long distance (and for me...a mile was a long distance!...I was more of a 50 or 100 yard dash person). In law school I ran a mile once with a friend who was a runner (as in doing those ridiculous run for 24 hours type of challenges). I ran the mile, then laid in the grass and tried to figure out if I had died while he ran another 2 miles or so. We were waiting for everyone to arrive for the bar association softball game.

As an adult it just never crossed my mind that I could run and that I would like it. I started trying to run about 4 years ago and ran my first ever 5k in 2017. Then life took some turns and I abandoned it again. Last year I finally put it back on my radar, just to help with some weight loss. I have found that I really "need" it now. Although I only run twice a week, that hour or so that I spend running is the best therapy in the world for me right now. It's the only time that I truly have to myself, without work or family obligations. It also satisfies my need to regulate things, track things, set goals, etc. You know...A type control freak type needs! But I do miss hiking. When I had some time to myself over Thanksgiving I really debated seeing family or just going for a long hike. I caved and saw family. But I would love to be able to spend 8 hours climbing a mountain again. It's good for the soul.

When I was stationed in Oman, we'd go out with the Hash House Harriers. It was grand fun. Once the trail led into a huge storm drain under the city. No clowns, luckily.

I ran with a few different hashes on an off for 25 years. It was a great time.

I can't run now, hurts too much. My Doctor said I shouldn't run either.
