    Happy Birthday Scott!

So you were a NY baby? First one of the year by chance?

    Happy Birthday! 🎂
May we raise children who love the unloved things - the dandelion, the worm, the spiderlings.
Children who sense the rose needs the thorn and run into rainswept days the same way they turn towards the sun...
And when they're grown and someone has to speak for those who have no voice,
may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things and be the one.

Thank you. No, I wasn't the first one. I was born at like 8 at night or something. It's so long ago I don't remember. :P

"Since the historic ruling, the Lovings have become icons for equality. Mildred released a statement on the 40th anniversary of the ruling in 2007: 'I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, Black or white, young or old, gay or straight, seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.'." - Mildred Loving (Loving v. Virginia)

Thank you everyone, it's been a great birthday weekend.

I got called a "has been" today at lunch. Utterly hilarious!

"Better to be a has been than a never was! What stories are you gonna tell your kids?"

The table nearby couldn't stop laughing. The dipshit exited the area quickly.

          A "has been"! Really?

I haven't heard that expression in years. Sounds like Boomer argot to me.

Maybe it means he has been there and has done that.

But what do I know. I'm as old as dirt. Here's my song:

I'm too damn old to get the blues,
too damn old to get the blues.
Must've walked it off, wore out my best shoes,
but now I'm too damn old to get the blues.

          Happy Birthday!

          Best wishes for several more!

Favorite country blues song along this line........... Cal Smith – It Takes Me All Night Long Lyrics

I used to get more women than I put my hands on
And I put my hands on more than I can get
If I knew I have to do what I used to love to do
I got it back to do it on I bet
It takes me all night long to do what I used to do all night long
The wild and wooly days have come and gone
It takes me all night long to do what I used to do all night long

I'm not the young rooster but I was in my day
But I still like to close on anyway
I'm not the king of a chicken yard but I would keep all hens tired
To keep 'em up and it ain't rainy day
It takes me all night on...

Lordy. Pre-MeToo for sure. Reminds me of this one, which I've played often enough:

I really don't think I could sell the Cal Smith tune, which I think was issued in about 1991, though the Watson song is from about 1983.

Good track for a "has been" birthday boy, though.

The last word on the topic, from the inimitable Pete Seeger:

The song starts at about 1:02, but there's some awesome picking for the first minute.

One of my favorite musicians, in a perfect song I don't recall. I bet I've heard it, but it sounds fresh.

Watching this video you can see him scolding himself (shaking his head) at missteps in the opening jig (or whatever—don't go too purist on me). I think he abandoned that tune and went to the well, so to speak, calling up the perfect song to say, "Used to be I could nail that picking without a problem...."

Fortunately his reservoir of material was profound. Most of us, if we start performing some song that comes to mind, we run into potholes soon enough. Even tuning down (scordatura, for classical purists) midstream so "effortlessly" is an art.
