    Stand there and get shot!

What sort of Orwellian world are we in?

Navy to Charge Officer Who Fired on Islamist During Chattanooga Terror Attack
A report at The Navy Times in July confirmed that one of the Marines shot during the Chattanooga terrorist attack exchanged fire with the terrorist. Navy Lt. Cmdr Timothy White also shot back at the terrorist.

But rather than being celebrated as a hero, Lt. Commander White may be charged for discharging a firearm on federal property.
In my humble opinion, as humble as I can put it, whoever made the decision to file charges here needs a new career immediately following his (or her) abject apology for being an asshole in uniform.

IF the information at the link is an accurate portrayal of the whole story, I agree that this seems to be a miscarriage of justice. The link leads to what is obviously an opinion piece written by someone with a political agenda. If anyone comes across an actual news story with reportage of all the facts, I'd be very interested to read it.

Mildred released a statement on the 40th anniversary of the ruling in 2007: 'I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, Black or white, young or old, gay or straight, seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.'." - Mildred Loving (Loving v. Virginia)

MAY be charged, says the article. TO be charged, says the headline. Sounds like they're trying to sensationalize something that hasn't even happened yet.

        Could be.

The link is based on Allen West:
Ladies and gents, resulting from the text message I received yesterday, I can confirm that the United States Navy is bringing charges against Lt. Cmdr Timothy White for illegally discharging a firearm on federal property.

The text message asked if it would be possible for Lt.Cmdr White to reach out to me. To wit[ch] I replied, affirmative.
I'd guess Lt.Cmdr White "reached out" expecting to get a little publicity to his plight, and it would be nice if this little publicity triggers a quit rethinking of this idea, and everyone can put on their best Sgt. Schultz impersonation.

        I'll settle for that.

I heard through back channels that an investigation with charges pending is being opened. All that means is that it's an investigation into possible violations of regulations specifically to see if charges need to be brought.

Technically it's the same distinction as all investigations with charges pending that result in punishment, but that's it.

LTC West is grandstanding as usual.

I speak Bok. I don't have to lie -erm "satire" about him online, I can just be the same guy here as I am in real life. And that sucks, Bok is a great guy in real life. Maybe this is his alter ego, the part that he suppresses in meatspace or maybe he just likes pissing people off but doesn't enjoy it as much when someone can punch him. Maybe he's congenial in real life because that's what he needs to do to get by and this is his true persona. People are complicated.

But make no mistake, Billy Jingo the persona here and Bok the guy in real life are conflicted that he's been forced to move from his "urban pioneer" hostel near the hookers to "Tea Party Central." Less crime, more space, and a happier wife can sometimes conflict with living the dream of being a Progressive. Or maybe he got a good deal on a new house and the economics (damn Capitalist) just worked to cash out of the old shitbarn he bought and built into a nice place.

I think he's uncomfortable with learning that he's more like those he hates than he previously thought.

It's quite common. I've been to quite a few gatherings over the years and almost all the assholes that showed up were much nicer in person. Some work out their angst online, some are awkward in person and have to be nice to get anyone to give them attention but get to the the alpha dog online, some are very meek and insecure in person (usually because their lives are fucking trainwrecks) and lash out online. Some people just like to fight but don't have the self-confidence to do it when the repercussions are real so they fight online.
