    High School Do-Over

    What's something you would have changed for yourself in high school given your experience today.

    Could be anything:

    Class you took or did not take;

    Clubs (joined or didn't join);

    Good or bad friendships;

    Good or bad romances;

    Habits you acquired that you didn't wish you had or habits you wish had but blew off;

    Opportunities missed or wrongly taken;

    The sky's the limit here. What would you have changed knowing what you know today?

    Not a whole bunch actually. I've only met one person from any of the three High schools I attended later in life.

      Not much in high school. College, a few things. High school was mostly pretty good.
      "Since the historic ruling, the Lovings have become icons for equality. Mildred released a statement on the 40th anniversary of the ruling in 2007: 'I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, Black or white, young or old, gay or straight, seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.'." - Mildred Loving (Loving v. Virginia)

        But would you have branched off or pruned off? Would you have been more daring or less less risky in retrospect?

        Gone for a gold ring or pulled it out of your nose?

          I still sort of wished I'd graduated in 3 years. Other than the pre-law class I took, I didn't find a whole lot academically that was necessary in the fourth year and the only required class I think was the social studies requirement. All in all, it probably turned out for the best.

          I wish I had kept up with my dancing, though. Not much I could have done about it.

              You aren't alone.

              The truth is that you have to study, takes tests, and practice no matter what you do:

              Deal drugs, prostitute, rob people or

              Get a day job, get promoted, finance your dreams.

              The only difference is who is grading.

                Gosh, where to begin.

                The usual stuff — I wish I'd taken better care of my body, and been at least a tiny bit more stylish. I had a thick full head of hair, the kind stylists charged extra to cut because it was so much work. But all I ever did was get a conservative southern bland cut. And by the time I found my individuality, my hair'd all fallen out and I'm bald as Mr. Burns. No biggie now, but at 19, it was not exactly a fun thing to live with.

                I wish I'd kept in touch with the only other kid at my school who was thought to be gay. I never acknowledged my sexuality, and he was the only one out of hundreds who seemed 'different'. But he was a transplant and his parents moved after just a few months, so I never got to establish the friendship we were headed towards as two misfits in the same awful PE class. I always wondered how he turned out; he wound up transferring to one of the most conservative, proudly redneck rural schools in the county. Last I'd heard of him was some co-classmate of ours telling me "yeah he was a total fag at that school" which made me cringe. I don't even remember his name, so I can't look him up on Facebook.

                Uh… One more thing, but I don't know how to talk about it. Karma's a bitch and I've been paying for some bad things I did as a youngster… and I wish I had been more careful about to whom I did those bad things. Evil, stupid, terrible things. Criminal things. As a big believer in karma I wish I'd had more foresight for how my life would suck today as a consequence of those things.

                Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln…

                  I wish I hadn't blown off my senior year, only because it's embarrassing now. It didn't affect my future college choices much. I wish I would have behaved a little more for most stuff and broken the rules more in a few key spots.

                  While there are all sorts of things I would do differently now, I wouldn't be the person I am today had I not made those choices back then.

                    True enough. We are who we are because of past experiences, at least in part.

                      I've heard this my entire life and and I believe it (maybe because I've heard it so much) but part of me thinks that different choices at various times would have resulted in a better "me" today.

                      I've gone through some idiocy that didn't actually make me a better person. It made me a different but not better person.
