    Halloween Toil and Trouble

Whew! I'm ready for a short break.

We did not do as much this year nor will we have as many people over since my abrupt departure for Wyoming sort of screwed our plans but we're doing a little.

I made decorated Halloween cookies yesterday (truly frightening on many levels). The Halloween booze has been bought (Mr. Snaps' tastes run to the bizarre this time of year).

I carved 3 pumpkins this morning including a severely gnarly one with warts. I've just put together the Halloween chili so it can bubble along all afternoon. In another hour or so, I'll put the sourdough bread in the oven.

Decorations are kinda sparse but we have a few out for atmosphere. In order to generate the correct level of fear and panic, Mr. Snaps is refusing to look for the tea lights until about 20 minutes before we start. This will result in a decent adrenaline spike when he realizes that the nearest store is sold out.

Are you doing anything for Halloween?

I found out my new neighborhood gets shut down to traffic, cops and barricades and all that, for about four hours because of all the kids. I have about 100 dollars in candy and two teenagers to pass it out. I am making lasagna.

I was out of candy by 7:30. It is bedlam.

This is one big cosplay event. Sure, there's some kids but it is mostly teens. And the adults are using kids as an excuse to dress up.

      Bedlam.

I got to watch the Gators win while the younger two went around a friend's neighborhood. Then I went to our local bar with my gameday shirt on. It was a subtle costume, I told everyone I was a USF fan.

The joke is that USF fans are actually either Gator or Seminole fans because their football team is terrible.

The kids cleaned up my 15 year old did what 15 year olds do which means she's grounded until New Year's (seriously).

Flew up to Boston to visit friends. Had a nice quiet dinner with said friends at a nice restaurant. Missed all festivities, even forget to let the little ones know I was sorry no full moon, otherwise the flying broom thingy.

Really thought about swinging by Salem since I was in the area, but couldn't fit it in.

Turned off all the lights, pulled down all the shades and bugged out! Worked at Trunk or Treat at church. Didn't want to give New Puppy a heart attack with all the kids coming to the door.

C'mon, don't be coy! What merits grounding for that long? Must have been dangerous and/or involved a vehicle.

Tell her to call me. Whatever it was, I think we can plead it down to a lighter sentence.

Party pooper. Trunk or Treat????????????? I thought conservatives didn't approve of helicopter parenting. Way bogus substitute for real trick-or-treating.

Bummer. We had about 40 or 50 real kids, all under about 12 and most in the 4 to 10 year old range, all in costume. The weather was perfect, so a bunch of the neighbors all sat out on our porches or steps and gave out treats.

**********chuckles********* Well, the neighborhood around the church is low-income, high density apartments and townhouses, muchly non-English speaking. So we figure we can pack 'em with advertising about the church programs as well as candy. So, ya see, it's really good ole capitalist marketing!

Showed up after curfew with a noticeable smell of alcohol on her breath and lied about where she was. She was warned the week before that the next time she lied to us her social life was over for the rest of the calendar year.

That'll do it. Sounds like somebody might need to spend some of her now-copious spare time volunteering in a drug/alcohol treatment center, so she can see how truly charming people are when their lives revolve around the next drink.

Uggh. You know and I know that in the grand scheme of things the drinking wasn't a huge issue. It's a shame, really. We all did it. I don't know the answer on those things. I can understand and respect the response. So hard to know where the line is between teaching them responsibility and teaching them to lie to us more. These are the times I'm so glad I'm not a parent. Tough duty.
