Two high school teachers accused of sexual relationship with same student

    KENNER, La. —

Two teachers at a Louisiana high school were arrested after allegedly having sex with a male student.
Shelley Dufresne, 32, and Rachel Respess, 24, are each charged with one count of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, according to the St. Charles Herald Guide.
Authorities say Dufresne and Respess had a sexual encounter with a student who was 16 at the time. According to WGNO-TV, the two teachers met the student after a Destrehan High School football game on Sept. 12 and drove to Respess' apartment in Kenner where the three had sex together.
Former students told WGNO the student and two teachers had been involved in a relationship for some time, meeting for sex multiple times and documenting some of their encounters on video.

“Nothing surprises me anymore really, but I do believe it's lack of a better judgment. They should have known better," Kenner Police Chief Michael Glaser said in a Wednesday press conference
I wonder if the police chief would have said the same thing if the victim was female and the teachers male.

I can't really tell if the "should have known better" refers to the tryst in general, or the fact that they videoed it.

I should research age of consent laws back in 70s and 80s to see if I was raped.

It's never rape if you paid for it.

I'm pretty certain that when I was a teen, 16 WAS the age of consent. Which doesn't change the fact that teachers occupy a special relationship to students and having sex with students is at least dumb in public, and at worst a sort of coercion. It's beyond bad judgment, but it probably wasn't rape or anything like it. OTOH, one of the reasons we protect those under the legal age of consent, even from their own inclinations, is that kids have such a wide range of maturity at that age. I was in my late teens or early 20s before I was actually comfortable doing anything beyond necking. I knew girls who were banging regularly and pursuing (sometimes catching) men 10+ years older, by the time they were 16. These were not damaged or abused girls; they were just early bloomers.

The rules are to protect the ones in the middle, always.
"Since the historic ruling, the Lovings have become icons for equality. Mildred released a statement on the 40th anniversary of the ruling in 2007: 'I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, Black or white, young or old, gay or straight, seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.'." - Mildred Loving (Loving v. Virginia)

In AK it's 16 unless the other person is an authority figure such as a cop, teacher, little league coach, clergy, then the age is 18.

Makes sense. If a person doesn't want to be held to a higher standard, they should choose a different profession. And while it may not be a crime, I'm fairly certain that it's grounds for loss of license to practice if a therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist and maybe even a physician has a sexual relationship with a patient of whatever age, while they're still a patient.

Perhaps this is a bigger issue in other fields of law. I have never had a client with whom I wished to engage in anything more intimate than friendship, and rarely that. Exactly once, actually.

It's inconceivable that male teachers exploiting a female student would be given any consideration at all.

I do wonder what's wrong with all these adult women, though.
