Complex Systems Won’t Survive the Competence Crisis

Complex Systems Won’t Survive the Competence Crisis

Great article about the effects resulting from the death of our meritocracy.

At a casual glance, the recent cascades of American disasters might seem unrelated. In a span of fewer than six months in 2017, three U.S. Naval warships experienced three separate collisions resulting in 17 deaths. A year later, powerlines owned by PG&E started a wildfire that killed 85 people. The pipeline carrying almost half of the East Coast’s gasoline shut down due to a ransomware attack. Almost half a million intermodal containers sat on cargo ships unable to dock at Los Angeles ports. A train carrying thousands of tons of hazardous and flammable chemicals derailed near East Palestine, Ohio. Air Traffic Control cleared a FedEx plane to land on a runway occupied by a Southwest plane preparing to take off. Eye drops contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria killed four and blinded fourteen.

While disasters like these are often front-page news, the broader connection between the disasters barely elicits any mention. America must be understood as a system of interwoven systems; the healthcare system sends a bill to a patient using the postal system, and that patient uses the mobile phone system to pay the bill with a credit card issued by the banking system. All these systems must be assumed to work for anyone to make even simple decisions. But the failure of one system has cascading consequences for all of the adjacent systems. As a consequence of escalating rates of failure, America’s complex systems are slowly collapsing.

The core issue is that changing political mores have established the systematic promotion of the unqualified and sidelining of the competent. This has continually weakened our society’s ability to manage modern systems. At its inception, it represented a break from the trend of the 1920s to the 1960s, when the direct meritocratic evaluation of competence became the norm across vast swaths of American society.

    Long but worth reading, thanks.
May we raise children who love the unloved things - the dandelion, the worm, the spiderlings.
Children who sense the rose needs the thorn and run into rainswept days the same way they turn towards the sun...
And when they're grown and someone has to speak for those who have no voice,
may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things and be the one.

Thanks for posting. It's a very good read about a very familiar problem. Some of it reads like Atlas Shrugged come to life. Almost every paragraph invites discussion.

I believe the decline in competency is broader than this article's compass, One passage struck me particularly:

      The American System Is Cracking

Promoting diversity over competency does not simply affect new hires and promotion decisions. It also affects the people already working inside of America’s systems. Morale and competency inside U.S. organizations are declining. Those who understand that the new system makes it hard or impossible for them to advance are demoralized, affecting their performance. Even individuals poised to benefit from diversity preferences notice that better people are being passed over and the average quality of their team is declining. High performers want to be on a high-performing team. When the priorities of their organizations shift away from performance, high performers respond negatively.

This effect was likely seen in a recent paper by McDonald, Keeves, and Westphal. The paper points out that white male senior leaders reduce their engagement following the appointment of a minority CEO. While it is possible that author Ijeoma Oluo is correct, and that white men have so much unconscious bias raging inside of them that the appointment of a diverse CEO sends them into a tailspin of resentment, there is another more plausible explanation. When boards choose diverse CEOs to make a political statement, high performers who see an organization shifting away from valuing honest performance respond by disengaging.

Some demoralized employees—like James Damore in his now-famous essay, “Google’s Ideological Echo Chamber”—will directly push back against pro-diversity arguments. Like James, they will be fired. Older, demoralized workers, especially those who are mere years from retirement, are unlikely to point out the decline in competency and risk it costing them their jobs. Those who have a large enough nest egg may simply retire to avoid having to deal with the indignity of having to attend another Inclusive Leadership seminar.

This is something I've bitched about for many years in our elementary schools, based on my personal experience, and I bet it can be backed up by any number of teachers. Our pedagogical obsession with "teamwork" does many things, but it does NOT produce high achieving individuals. The team seems to always dumb down to some sort of average competency. Slackers get by, smart kids put their energy elsewhere.

Fact is, our schools have been on a jihad to erase individual achievers. It's not just the notorious "participation trophies," but Valedictorian honors have been scrapped, Gifted programs scrapped, even competitive playground games are discouraged, and propagandistic slogans abound, such as "There is no 'I' in '"team.'"

In colleges and universities an absurd percentage of students identify as victims on the "intersectionality" wheel. Not surprisingly.

And not surprisingly academics are de-emphasized. And why not? Academic admission standards have been openly lowered.

New College, near me here in Florida, has been in the news recently as DeSantis seeks to remake it as a responsible center of academic excellence (as called for in its original charter) and root out the leftwing rot. The howls have been deafening. New College had become a top-heavy money pit, on the state dime, and intervention was clearly called for.

My wife showed me an article recently pointing out that before the makeover this small college had 5 "science" professors, something like 5 English and math professors, and about 40 (forty) professors in gender/diversity/equity studies. I should look it up to get the exact numbers.

Anyway the students are responding rationally, but the long term effect will be a society unable to sustain itself. John Galt won't be hiding; there just won't be any John Galts.

New College's critics continue to offer more complaints than ideas (heraldtribune.com) (opinion page, guest essay by Robert Allen, Jr., July 19)

. . . Those who question the need for a change in emphasis – despite the college’s historic declining standards and sustained drop in applications – only need to look at what the New College faculty has been emphasizing. New College's website currently reflects, before the full implementation of changes, that of about 100 faculty members:
        • Five teach history.
        • Five teach mathematics.
        • Four teach economics.
        • 39 are affiliated with teaching gender studies.

        Yes, 39.

Think of the proportion of various gender studies" majors such an unbalanced rostor of professors would produce. Those grads have an extremely limited set of career choices, and NONE which will better civil society, bluntly.

They will be angry young curmudgeons and very lonely, bitter crones soon enough.

Do you recall the essay by a young liberal woman who lamented that the only men she wanted to date were conservative?

Aha! I'm shocked it wasn't hard to find. It's from early June of this year, I'm a liberal — hard to find progressive masculine men to date (nypost.com)

Black CEOs on the Fortune 500 reach new record high in 2023—meet the 8 executives

              Let’s see … 8 divided by 500 …. carry the 2 … minus the 6 ……
Only 25 Black executives have led Fortune 500 companies in the ranking's 69 year history.

I used to believe that if anyone really knew how to fix it, it would get fixed. And I still think that’s reasonably true, but it assumes everyone wants it fixed, and I no longer believe that’s the case.

My conclusion is if there is a competence problem, it ain’t because of women and Black people.

Duh. You mean the people who have always had to be smarter, work harder and sacrifice more to get a job that you could get just by cleaning up well and being moderately capable? Yeah, I think we're all aware of that.

Mildred released a statement on the 40th anniversary of the ruling in 2007: 'I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, Black or white, young or old, gay or straight, seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.'." - Mildred Loving (Loving v. Virginia)
