Sports Illustrated Published AI-Generated Articles Under Fake Names

Sports Illustrated Published AI-Generated Articles Under Fake Names – HotAir

Sports Illustrated was once the benchmark for sports content but today the site has been accused of publishing AI-generated content under the names of authors who are also AI-generated. Case in point, Drew Ortiz who had a photo and an author biography on the site.

Internal link is to this site: Sports Illustrated Published Articles by Fake, AI-Generated Writers (futurism.com) "We asked them about it — and they deleted everything."

It was only a matter of time. I love the "profile" of the "author" they chose:
Outside of Sports Illustrated, Drew Ortiz doesn’t seem to exist. He has no social media presence and no publishing history. And even more strangely, his profile photo on Sports Illustrated is for sale on a website that sells AI-generated headshots, where he’s described as “neutral white young-adult male with short brown hair and blue eyes."
At least Sports illustrated has a sense of humor, if only ironically, in its response:

We want to be very clear: What is described in this Futurism story does not represent the hardworking journalists who make up the SI Union.
    Exactly.

Brings to mind the Laura Nyro song, "Eli's (or AI's) a-coming."

On the bright side, if they apply the not-our-hard-working-journalists techniques to other areas, akin to the enhancements of the Silly Duck scott posted nearby, https://community.notpolitical.info/...797#post379797, we can look forward to some pretty interesting swim suit issues.

Correction: The "response" I cited above is not from corporate, but from the "hardworking journalists" themselves.

The corporate response is this, blaming outside agitators:

        The whole statement:

Today, an article was published alleging that Sports Illustrated published AI-generated articles. According to our initial investigation, this is not accurate.

The articles in question were product reviews and were licensed content from an external, third-party company, AdVon Commerce. A number of AdVon’s e-commerce articles ran on certain Arena websites. We continually monitor our partners and were in the midst of a review when these allegations were raised.

AdVon has assured us that all of the articles in question were written and edited by humans. According to AdVon, their writers, editors, and researchers create and curate content and follow a policy that involves using both counter-plagiarism and counter-AI software on all content. However, we have learned that AdVon had writers use a pen or pseudo name in certain articles to protect author privacy – actions we strongly condemn – and we are removing the content while our internal investigation continues and have since ended the partnership.
