    CA Newsom's vision for California

His inaugural speech in the LATimes:
The story of our state is the story of a dream — one that has drawn strivers and seekers here forever. It’s what brought my family to California some three generations ago — the promise not just of a better life, but a bigger one, with opportunities they couldn’t find anywhere else in the world.

So deep does the California Dream run in the history and character of our state that it can feel as enduring as our primeval forests or our majestic mountain ranges. But there is nothing inevitable about it. Every dream depends on the dreamers. And it is up to us to renew the California Dream for a new generation. And now more than ever, it is up to us to defend that dream....
It's almost a macabre parody of another CA governor's remarks:

Gavin Newsom more resembles the Mamas and the Papas, on such a winter's day. He says, "I want to be clear: We will be bold." So I've added some bold emphasis here:
...Now more than ever, we Californians know how much a house matters, and children matter — because so many of our neighbors have lost theirs. Together, let us build a house stronger than the coming storms, yet open to the world. A house that provides shelter to all who need it and sanctuary to all who seek it — where opportunity abounds for all who will work for it. A true California house, sun-kissed, dream-soaked, and built with the sweat of honest work. We will not have one house for the rich and one for the poor, or one for the native-born and one for the rest. We will build one house for one California.

Because what is a house but a home. And California is our home.

In our home, every child should be loved, fed and safe. My wife, Jennifer, and I have four children, and there is nothing more important, I hope you can tell, than giving them a good and happy life. But all kids — not just the children of a governor and a filmmaker — should have a good life in California… shouldn’t be ripped away from their parents at the border… and nor should they be left hungry while politicians seek to pour billions into a wall that should never be built. [Newsom's reference to his son Dutch, who was running around the stage] (This is exactly how it was scripted.) We will support parents — they need support, trust me — so they can give their kids the love and care they need, especially in those critical early years of life.

In our home, no one should live in constant fear of eviction or spend their whole paycheck to keep a roof overhead. We’re committed to launching a Marshall Plan for affordable housing and lift up the fight against homelessness from a local matter to a state-wide mission.

In our home, every person should have access to quality, affordable healthcare. Far-away judges and politicians may turn back our progress. But we will never waver in our pursuit of guaranteed healthcare for all Californians. We will use both our market power and our moral power to demand fairer prices for prescription drugs. We will stop stigmatizing mental health and start supporting it. And we will always protect a woman's right to choose.

In our home, we believe in justice for all. We will defend the progress we’ve made to reform our criminal justice system. We will continue the fight against over-incarceration and over-crowding in our prisons. And we will end the outrage that is private prisons in the state of California once and for all.

In our home, working people deserve fair pay, the right to join a union, the chance at a middle-class life. We will fight not … for growth at any cost but for inclusive, sustainable growth. We will shape the future of work… and connect higher education and skills training to the next generation of middle-class jobs… because in a time of swift and unsettling change, all Californians should be able to count on a measure of security and a real shot at opportunity.

And those who dream of building something of their own — a restaurant, a bookstore, a family farm — they will get our support. Our small businesses help explain why California is one of the biggest economies on Earth....
Healthcare, childcare, a "Marshal Plan" for housing, sanctuary for all who seek it... what's not to like

I presume that like all Democrats, Newsom is in favor of "strong border security."

Trump should just build a wall around California.

Meanwhile, Big Bill de Blasio in New York City is not to be outdone. I just noticed the lead headline at Drudge (via NBC local):

NYC Mayor Guarantees Comprehensive Health Care for All in Historic Surprise Announcement
New York City will begin guaranteeing comprehensive health care to every single resident regardless of someone's ability to pay or immigration status, an unprecedented plan that will protect the more than half-a-million New Yorkers currently using the ER as a primary provider, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

It's not health insurance, his spokesman clarified after the surprise announcement on MSNBC Tuesday morning.
"This is the city paying for direct comprehensive care (not just ERs) for people who can't afford it, or can't get comprehensive Medicaid -- including 300,000 undocumented New Yorkers," spokesman Eric Phillips tweeted.
Whoa Nelly! 300,000 they say? Free health care in a sanctuary city & state?

      How about 3 million?

      And why not?

      How about 30 million?

I dunno. I think maybe de Blasio went to Boston University and majored in economics. He may have been the top of his class, even!

But at Boston U, that means, as the old song puts it, You're just tall, that's all.

Boy, that really makes me wanna move to NY and pay for everybody's free stuff.

Unless you live in California… Whaddya care??

The whole idea of America is 50 little laboratories of democracy, each going their own way as much as they can within the confines of the federal system. What do you care if California goes full socialist while Alabama goes full anarchist? You don't live there, so why worry?

Unfortunately, Tom (whom I can't quote directly here for some reason) size matters. Vermont may produce some nutty ice cream magnates and a fruitcake governor, but it doesn't matter a hill of beans. Last I heard they were offering to pay people to move there.

If CA particularly goes into the crapper, and I'm not making a scatological reference to the streets of San Francisco—I'd never go there—the country will be seriously affected.

You may have noticed little type on various consumer products, from the California Department of Silly Labels, such as "This product contains ingredients determined by California to cause cancer." It used to be that only PA had its blessing on everyone's consumables. One quirky state was tolerable, I guess, but CA can demand "toleration" because it's so big. If it bans products, or makes requirements for them, we're very likely to see the changes ripple out across the fruited plain.

CA in receivership is a disastrous prospect for the country. A California radiating millions of illegal immigrants across America is pretty scary. CA's two-tiered economy, the wealthy coastal elite with their walls and shrubbery, and the poor wage slaves who trim the shrubbery and stay outside the walls, is a bad model for the country.

And yet, they don't appear to be in receivership. If anything, the liberal policies seem to have don't better for the bigger than those of the previous governor.

I assume that was intended to be "done better," and autocorrupt struck again.

You're mistaken. I lived in CA during the Deukmejian and Wilson years, and while I disagreed with many of their policies, I can't fault the economics. We had well-maintained roads and bridges, the cities were pricey (not nearly as pricey as NYC), but a couple of people on entry-level salaries could find a decent apartment, and my friends who decided to settle down and have families only had to move to Oakland or one of its suburbs to be able to buy a house. That was then; this is now.

Brown's boondoggle, the high-speed train from SF to LA (which will never pay for itself, because once you get to LA, you need...a car!), keeps gasoline at above $3.25/gallon at the best of times. Housing prices are beyond the reach of not just poor and working class people, but pretty much the entire middle class at this point. Nothing in our town sells for less than $850,000 - and that's a 2BR/1 bath fixer-upper. Poor people have just parked their cars and live in them. To get to downtown Oakland, I drive through one continuous reeking homeless encampment for about 4 out of 7 miles, and I live in a nice (and expensive) area. Every freeway ramp has an encampment - a permanent one - under it. I have to get my car aligned at least 4 times a year because of bad roads cratered with potholes and uneven paving where roadwork was started but never completed.

Newsom will be as bad as Brown or worse. He's already promising pie in the sky, with no hint that we JUST CAN'T AFFORD IT.

Yep, IL is a basket case too.

Remember that old expression, "Don't eat your seed corn"?

That's essentially what the leftist policies do. And it's easy to forget how excited the left was for socialist "experiments" in the early stages, bellies full of seed corn.

The huzzahs that accompanied Venezuela's Hugo Chavez when he "cut poverty by 50%" and so on aren't something socialists want you to remember when the Venezuelans have to eat their pets and prostitute their children.

The wealthy socialists don't retreat. Who's the richest person in Venezuela? Why, it's Hugo Chavez's daughter! What a surprise.

America is different, of course, in that the loony states are, really, just bad segments of a healthy whole. They're like the tweakers, the meth-head cousins at a big family reunion.

That sounds like a lot of money for such a hellscape.
