Trump to host G7 at his own Florida resort property

    By Maegan Vazquez, CNN

(CNN)White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney announced during a White House press briefing that the 2020 G7 summit will be held at Trump National in Doral, Florida, from June 10-12.

"We used the same set of criteria that previous administrations have used," Mulvaney said.
He said Doral was "far and away the best physical facility for this meeting."

President Donald Trump is sure to receive criticism and will face questions about whether he stands to profit financially from the large summit. Trump has received such criticism in the past for hosting foreign leaders, including China's President Xi Jinping, at his Mar-a-Lago golf club in Florida.

Doral has the best facilities of all the sites under consideration, Mulvaney told reporters.
Mulvaney defended hosting the 2020 G7 at Doral, saying that Trump will not be profiting in "any way, shape or form."

Too bad he "won't be profiting from it in any way, shape or form" because profits are WAY down in just one year there:

Is it? Mar-a-Lago surely is, because it is his second home. But is the Doral?

"WAY down" but still almost $4.3 Million. That's not chicken feed.

But he will. Even if we discount the idea that it will be filled in the off season, meeting costs that would be unmet, and even if we ignore all the followers like reporters that will pay full price to be there, the free publicity is golden.

Sometimes I think he's pranking them. The Hate Trump crowd is triggered yet again, but the emoluments mirage is evaporating again.

The Trump brand doesn't need publicity, of course, but he would never pass up such an opportunity. After all, it's not called "The Doral." Its name is "The Trump National Doral."

But is that what "emoluments" is meant to counter? I don't think so. You and Adam haven't agreed that I've seen about the state of arguments in court, but I can't believe the Founders had in mind criminalizing ordinary commercial activity, such as providing lodging and meals to visitors, if such was the ordinary prior pursuit of an elected office holder. The Founders pictured our leadership as arising from independent, ordinary life in the private sector.

They would not arrange to easily criminalize private commercial activity.

"Emoluments" pertains more to cash in the envelope corruption, as we saw with Spiro Agnew, though he was preying on domestic clients.

Anyway, I saw a column by Andrew McCarthy, Trump Doral resort pick for G7 a 'real unforced error'.
Appearing on "Outnumbered Overtime" with anchor Julie Banderas, McCarthy said the decision could play into the impeachment inquiry that House Democrats are trying to wage against Trump.

"So, to give them this kind of grist to continue the investigations they're doing and to push courts for things like, you know, they're demanding the president's business records and tax records and all that stuff, it just seems to me he's giving them a gift," McCarthy said.
Sometimes I think Trump is pranking them, goading and triggering them for sport.

Here, there's every likelihood the research that designated the Doral was impartial, and that the benefit for the president's wallet will be minimal.

The decision to hold the G7 meeting at the Trump National Doral Golf Club was discussed for months, since Trump made a pitch to have next year’s summit at the resort during August’s G7 conference in France. Democrats concerns over the ethics of the president personally profiting off an official government event.

During a rare White House press briefing, Mulvaney addressed concerns about potential "emoluments violations" and told reporters that Trump will not make any money off the event. He said the golf club will provide the location and services at cost.
“The president has made it clear that he doesn’t profit from being here,” Mulvaney said during the briefing. “The resort is doing it at cost. It’s much cheaper to do it at Doral than at other sites [that were being considered]."

Mulvaney said the Trump administration started with 12 potential sites to host the G7 summit, and advance teams that scouted locations came back with the suggestion to hold it at Doral.

“We used the same set of criteria that other administrations used,” Mulvaney said. “It became apparent at the end of that process that Doral was far and away, far and away, the best facility to host this conference.”
If you are convinced of Trump's essential corruption, if you dislike and distrust him, consider this: If he goads the Democrats into impeaching him on groundless charges, as suggested elsewhere here (Don’t Be Surprised If Trump Is Never Impeached), such that the House becomes powerless to control events before the 2020 election, has he in effect insulated himself from any impeachment charges in his second term? Could that be a deliberate strategy?

Forget emoluments, which has never been adjudicated and consider that President Trump just awarded HIMSELF a big government contract.

              Last I remember, this was a no-no.

But that doesn't mean that the secret service has already checked it out.

How is this worse than the government literally buying tons of President Obama's books while he was in office?

So someone else should be able to profit off the G7 but since it's Trump and the services will be less expensive and rendered at cost you have a problem?

                          Strange.
