Is there a compelling state interest or even, as the science has become clearer, a rational basis for prohibiting you marrying your first cousin? If not, then yes, because freedom of association is Constitutionally guaranteed, and marriage is, as the Supremes have already determined, a fundamental right. IIRC, the rationale for prohibiting first-cousin marriages was that it produced defective offspring. We now know that two copies of a broken gene produce defective offspring, regardless of the relationship of the owners of the genes. And unrelated people certainly produce a substantial percentage of defective offspring. So, assuming that eugenics was once a rational basis or compelling state interest in prohibiting cousin marriage, it no longer is. Therefore, it's a denial of equal protection to prevent two consenting adults exercising a fundamental right just because of their family status.

You are welcome, by the way, to any of my first cousins who interest you, as I certainly wouldn't have them.

So, I have you down for same sex marriage, polygamous marriage, and first cousin marriage. Check.

Are any of your first cousins over the age of 75, fabulously wealthy, no living heirs, and if terribly unattractive, in a wheelchair? If so...can you hook a sister up?

Well, personally, I don't that I'm down for marriage at all, but I want the option. As long as no kids, legal incompetents or animals are abused, I don't much care about anyone else's choice of marriage partner.

Hah, fat chance. If I had a cousin like that, I might consider marrying him/her. Nope, assuming you're only interested in my male cousins, one is gay, married and currently unemployed; the other is straight, married and while his company does pretty well, he and his current wife support his ex-wife and several children of their respective first marriages. I have a nominal first cousin who's really my second cousin (or first cousin once removed...I don't really understand the distinction), but he's an incorrigble nerd, not wealthy AFAIK, and probably won't get married until you can marry your droid.

I don't care either, only when it comes to state recognition and therefor privileges, benefits, and obligations that must be recognized/enforce/given by the state. Other than that, it's none of my business.

The Church and the various other religious institutions need to get out of the business of Marriage and back into the business of Holy Matrimony. Legal Marriage is a civil construct relating to obligations, assets and liabilities. It really all boils down to shared lives that may or may not be permanent.

Holy Matrimony is something entirely different, and this is where the "Sanctity of Marriage" argument belongs.

More lives and families can be destroyed? Oh yay.
May we raise children who love the unloved things - the dandelion, the worm, the spiderlings.
Children who sense the rose needs the thorn and run into rainswept days the same way they turn towards the sun...
And when they're grown and someone has to speak for those who have no voice,
may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things and be the one.

I'm comfortable with the definitions currently in the law, as long as there are so-called "Romeo and Juliet" provisions.
