10 things to know about Sen. Jeff Sessions, Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general

By Amber Phillips | November 18
In Donald Trump's world, most roads, it seems, lead back to Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), President-elect Trump's pick for attorney general.

After Sessions became one of the first members of Congress to endorse Trump this February, he became an adviser on almost every major decision and policy proposal Trump made during the campaign:

–A top Sessions aide helped Trump communicate his immigration policy

–Sessions chaired Trump national security advisory committee

–Sessions advised*Trump on who to choose for vice president. (Sessions was also in the running himself for the No. 2 job.)

"The president-elect has been unbelievably impressed with Senator Sessions and his phenomenal record as Alabama’s attorney general and U.S. attorney,” a Trump transition statement released Thursday read. “It is no wonder the people of Alabama re-elected him without opposition.”

In a relatively short time, Sessions has elevated himself from back-bencher to a "arguably one of the top 5 power players in the country now," said Alabama GOP consultant Brent Buchanan. Here's*crash course in a politician likely to be a pivotal figure*in Trump's administration[…]

Some of the highlights from the article: he's anti-immigration (not just illegal) he's popular back home, he's been in office for decades, he's a war hawk and a debt hawk and he's a climate change skeptic.

He's also been dogged by accusations of racism because of some jokes and comments he's alleged to have made, but everything I've seen points to it all being heresay. Plus, his attacks on the Klan as a state attorney pretty much ended their influence in Alabama; the leader got the death penalty and the organization was hit with a $7 million fine.

It sure doesn't sound like the kind of work one would do if they didn't like minorities.

Still, he's pretty radical in his climate skepticism and his anti-immigration stance. I also believe we need to slow legal as well as illegal immigration, but I'm more of a "market will work itself out" kinda guy. He really wants to close the spigot completely for a while.

Of course, being a southern conservative who was embraced by the Tea Party, he'll be immediately accepted as a white racist bigot without question.

This is rather old (from 2008, I believe) but a fairly good synopsis of where he stood on various immigration legislation:

In more recent times he has expressed a desire to close the border completely until all the current new immigrants are properly assimilated. I believe the gist of it was we cannot afford to house and feed more immigrants even if they are legal. I agree with him on that notion, too, by the way.

That doesn't make him anti-immigration, it means our current system sucks and needs to be fixed before we continue.
