I suspect a number of adults treat their own political opinions that way: in a classroom there's no argument, no perspective on the part of the young students (their "web" is not that developed, nor can they challenge the teacher's "authority"), so it amounts to an uncritical affirmation of the "teacher's" wisdom.

    To me that ain't teaching; that's exploitation.
    Agree. This teacher could have chosen to celebrate Memorial Day. Early, perhaps. Or 4th of July, early, since that's in the summer when school's out.

      Oh please. Have adored her for 55 years with or without the internet.

      You are just wrong about this topic. Not many folks are as opposed to nonselective, illegal, or mass immigration as I am. That doesn't mean that our schools shouldn't include foreign traditions. In third grade at a Catholic School we visited a synagogue. In fourth grade we visited the Baptists.When I was in fifth grade my French teacher told us about French traditions. IN Seventh grade, a kid's mom came in to tell us about some Jewish traditions (and fed us). I don't even have a problem with teaching kids about Muslim traditions as long as there isn't an endorsement or normalization of the entire culture. I strongly believe that we are a European nation, born of the unique history, law, and tradition of assimilation of other (including conquerors) cultures of Mother England. All I object to is the president's face on the piñata, not the piñata itself. I object to Mexican and/or Mexican-American students being allowed a violent or menacing reaction to American kids wearing American flags (Live Oak High School circa 2010).

      There i time in the day to teach the core subjects and still be able to participate in cultural enrichment. In fact, as we demand that civics be returned to the curriculum, culture is a close second..

      And day's at the morn;
      Morning's at seven;
      The hill-side's dew-pearled;

      The snail's on the thorn:
      God's in his heaven—
      All's right with the world!

        Cinco de Mayo isn't in the same league with Memorial Day and Independence Day is outside the school year. Cinco de mayo is more like St Patrick's Day.

            There's always International Workers Day, May 1st.

            Flag Day (June 14) can sub for July 4th, in schools that go through June.

              Miss the word "early"? Do you know what "early" means?
              Cinco de mayo is more like St Patrick's Day.
              No it's not. St. Patrick's day doesn't celebrate some foreign country's war victory.

                But neither of them have a Trump piñata for school kids to hate on.

                  Define war. St Patrick's Day would be equivalent to a HIJRAH.
