    Washington DC election results...

With 81% of the votes in, Hillary leads Trump 93% to 4%. The vote totals are 255,000 for Hillary, and 11,000 for Trump.

My question. Just how many Republicans are in Washington DC?

And this isn't just because of Trump.

    In 2012, Obama got 267,000 votes to Romney's 21,000.

Doesn't the GOP have staff in Washington? Families? Friends? How can Washington DC be almost totally in the Democrats pocket? If these are hired staffers, why do GOP congressmen hire someone that is directly opposed to their own ideals?

Gee, let's make DC a state. Big government needs an advocate, y'think?
    • "I'm a hell of a lot smarter than most of you guys." — Joe Biden, at Jesse Jackson's funeral, March 2026.
    • "That's all I do in my life. I make deals. I'm really good at it." — President Donald Trump, Oct. 13, 2025.
    • “Inside every progressive is a totalitarian screaming to get out,” — David Horowitz.
    • "We [Democrats] are all willing to work with anyone who is serious about doing the work of censoring the American people, and advancing progress." — Ayanna Pressley, explaining progressives.
    • "Florida is where Woke goes to die." — Ron DeSantis.
    • "No one is above the law, and everyone has the right to a trial to prove innocence." — Nancy Pelosi, explaining Lawfare.
    • “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety”— Ben Franklin, who got it right.
    • "The way I see it, there's always, c'mon, there's always money. It's there." — Elizabeth Warren, explaining socialism.
    • "The interesting thing about the Green New Deal is it wasn't originally a climate thing at all.... We really think of it as a how-do-you-change-the-entire-economy thing." — Saikat Chakrabarti, then AOC's Chief of Staff.

Most staffers live in Virginia. Some in Maryland and others in West (by God) Virginia. DC is a cesspool.

Congresscritters live in DC but vote in their home states. Their hangers-on and minions live out in the Maryland and DC suburbs. The rest of DC's residents are students at the umpteen universities within those 68 square miles, and poor, working poor, and working-class people in Anacostia.
"Since the historic ruling, the Lovings have become icons for equality. Mildred released a statement on the 40th anniversary of the ruling in 2007: 'I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, Black or white, young or old, gay or straight, seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.'." - Mildred Loving (Loving v. Virginia)

Have you ever driven through DC?

Christ on a crutch, you sound like that redneck I dated the summer before high school.

DC is not a cesspool. Like most cities, DC has slums. It also has beautiful old homes, lovely (and expensive) neighborhoods like the one my cousin and his husband live in, stately government buildings, butt-ugly government buildings, monuments that you can safely visit at most hours of the day or evening, and all the other features of a major cosmopolitan city.

It's mostly poor blacks or extremely wealthy educated whites. There is zero middle class in the city, it's just too expensive. Everyone who lives there is in some way connected to the government, so there's a lot of that "vote for my interests" mentality at work as far as keeping government growing.

The city, from what I've heard from conservative acquaintances who live there, is it's so elitist it almost circles back around to parody.

I was in DC last month. When the sun went down I was told to get the fuck out and I did.

If it's so nice, why does every house have bars on the windows?

I actually like DC as a city. My only real wag about the place is "it would be a nice city if it wasn't full of politicians." I love the nice, wide sidewalks, it is generally very clean as cities go, and I have long said that the DC Metro is the nicest public transit system on the planet, which is saying something when one considers how very nice the Moscow and St. Petersburg subway systems are.

That's true. I'm not saying that it's perfect or idyllic. I just like the general structure: the stops are nice, I like the blinky lights that tell you that the train is approaching, and the train cars are nice and wide and comfortable. And it's pretty quiet, by subway standards. Far, far nicer than the NY subway or Chicago's L, from a rider's perspective.
