How many doctors are using "abortion bans" as a way to be activists?

Watching the DNC tonight and there are women who are saying that "Under Donald Trump I wouldn't be alive" and they all have stories of where not getting an abortion would have been terrible and they would have died.

But all of the laws already exempt this, so why?

Oddly enough, for most doctors, I believe this is analogous to using your firearm in self-defense: you may know you have the right to do it, but you also know that if some zealot in power (or some busybody with a lawyer) decides to prosecute or sue you, you're still going to suffer and incur huge legal costs defending your decision. The laws are badly written enough that a physician could be prosecuted (or, in Texas, sued by an uninvolved 3rd party crusader) for providing an abortion s/he responsibly and ethically found necessary to prevent the death or serious injury of the pregnant woman. The financial and reputational damage is just not worth it to many.
"Since the historic ruling, the Lovings have become icons for equality. Mildred released a statement on the 40th anniversary of the ruling in 2007: 'I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, Black or white, young or old, gay or straight, seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.'." - Mildred Loving (Loving v. Virginia)

I hadn't thought of that, but it's crap and malpractice.

Really? You'd be willing to risk your livelihood, everything you own, and your professional reputation, maybe your and your family's safety, on a bet that nobody in the ER or OR is a zealot who will swear you did a procedure that wasn't "necessary" as determined by a bunch of yahoos on a jury? I'd quit and go into urology.

The DNC is making "freedom" and "abortion" synonymous. It's a far piece from Clinton's "safe, legal and rare" propaganda.

By the way, I wonder how the free vasectomy business is going.

The high, pinched delivery of Charles Schumer's speech makes me wonder if he availed himself of the service. (He's my age and I've heard him do much better; I think someone told him he'd sound younger if he used a higher tone.)

Wonder if the number of medical students going into OB/Gyn is dropping.
