Hamas expected to release 33 hostages in first phase of emerging ceasefire deal

Israeli officials say Hamas expected to release 33 hostages in emerging Gaza ceasefire deal | CNN
Hamas is expected to release 33 hostages during the first phase of an emerging ceasefire agreement being finalized by negotiators in Doha, two Israeli officials said, the first positive sign in months that a truce in the Israel-Hamas war may be in sight.

Officials have expressed cautious optimism that a deal could soon be announced to halt 15 months of fighting that has destabilized the Middle East and devastated Gaza, allow for more aid into the besieged Palestinian enclave, and ensure the return of dozens of hostages held by Hamas since its attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Hamas and its allies still hold 94 of the 251 hostages taken from Israel, including at least 34 of whom are dead, according to the Israeli government.

Israel believes that most of the 33 hostages to be released in the first phase of the deal are alive, a senior Israeli official told reporters on Monday, but the bodies of dead captives will also likely be among those released. The first phase would take place over an initial 42-day ceasefire.

The senior Israeli official said the parties appear to be on the verge of an agreement and that Israel is prepared to immediately implement the deal once it has been inked.

US President Joe Biden expressed similar optimism in a speech Monday focused on foreign policy, saying the United States was “pressing hard to close this.”

“The deal we have structured would free the hostages, halt the fighting, provide security to Israel, and allow us to significantly surge humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians who suffered terribly in this war that Hamas started. They have been through hell,” Biden said.

Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump told Newsmax that his understanding is that “there’s been a handshake and they’re getting it finished.” Trump’s incoming special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff previously told reporters he was working alongside Biden administration officials during the negotiations, and hoped to get a temporary ceasefire deal enacted before Trump’s inauguration on Monday.

A diplomat close to the negotiations told CNN a final round of proximity talks to finalize any issues was scheduled to take place in Doha on Tuesday. The same day, some of the hostages’ families have been invited to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

The release of the 33 hostages would be the first phase of the deal being finalized. Negotiations to reach the second phase – which is intended to end the war – would begin on the 16th day of the implementation of the deal.

Under the latest proposals, Israeli forces would maintain a presence along the Philadelphi Corridor – a narrow strip of land along the Egypt-Gaza border – during the first phase of the agreement, the officials said. The presence of Israeli troops along the corridor previously contributed to sinking a potential deal in September during the last round of negotiations.

Israel would also maintain a buffer zone inside Gaza along the border with Israel, the official said, without specifying how wide that zone would be – another subject of contention during the negotiations. A Hamas official told CNN earlier that the group wanted the buffer zone to return to the pre-October 7 size of 300-500 meters (330-545 yards) from the border line, while Israel was requesting 2,000 meters.

I'm sure Trump had nothing to do with this. I'll grin and bear it while Biden takes credit, remembering Reagan's adage, there's little you can't accomplish if you don't mind who gets the credit. But this was baked into Trump's vow that all hell would break loose if the American hostages were not home by his inauguration. Israel-Hamas cease-fire, hostage release deal reached | Fox News

Israel and Hamas have agreed to a cease-fire deal that also ensures the release of hostages, Fox News has confirmed.

"A Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal was reached following the Qatari Prime Minister's meeting with Hamas negotiators, and separately Israeli negotiators in his office," a source briefed on the matter told Fox News.

Separately, a senior Hamas official confirmed to Fox News that a deal was reached.

The conflict, which began with Hamas’ brutal attacks on October 7, 2023, has left over 1,200 Israelis dead, more than 250 taken hostage, and thousands of others killed on both sides.

The deal, brokered by Qatari negotiators and facilitated by Egyptian intermediaries, also saw significant involvement from the United States. Both the outgoing Biden administration and the incoming Trump administration applied strategic pressure to finalize the agreement, despite concerns about Hamas rearming and internal tensions within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition.

Sources told Fox News Digital that a weekend meeting between Netanyahu and President-elect Trump's incoming Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, led to the breakthrough. Witkoff’s assurances reportedly convinced Netanyahu to accept the deal, despite threats from a right-wing party to withdraw from the coalition if it passed.

The agreement calls for the release of three hostages on the first day, followed by weekly batches. Women, children, and men over 50 will be prioritized initially, with younger men in humanitarian cases included later. Updates on hostages’ statuses will alternate between announcements of survivors and confirmation of those who did not survive captivity.

The operation’s execution relies on extensive coordination among the IDF, Shin Bet, Israeli Police, the Ministry of Health, the International Red Cross, and Egyptian authorities. Over 42 days, 33 Israeli hostages are expected to be released. Early stages will focus on civilian women, children and female soldiers, followed by elderly men. The final hostage in this group is scheduled for release on the 42nd day.

On the 16th day, the second phase will begin, addressing the release of younger men, soldiers, and the return of remains. Netanyahu assured hostage families that every captive is accounted for in the deal. Approximately 1,000 Palestinian prisoners will be freed in exchange, with murder convicts barred from returning to the West Bank. Instead, they will be sent to Gaza, Qatar, or Turkey.

The cease-fire will also facilitate significant humanitarian aid to Gaza, with up to 600 trucks of supplies entering daily. By the 22nd day, displaced residents will be allowed to return to northern Gaza. Qatari and Egyptian teams will manage vehicle inspections, while pedestrian crossings will not require checks. The IDF will withdraw from the Nitzarim corridor but maintain a limited presence along the Philadelphi Route.

Although intelligence on the hostages’ conditions remains limited, assessments suggest that most are alive. Before each release stage, Israel will receive updated information on their identities and health statuses. The International Red Cross will oversee their transfer from Gaza to Israel, ensuring their safety while addressing logistical challenges such as crowd control.

Upon entering Israel, hostages will undergo identity verification and initial questioning by Shin Bet and the IDF. Medical teams stationed at the border will provide immediate care, and those requiring further treatment will be airlifted to hospitals. After receiving necessary care, hostages will be reunited with their families.

Israel’s security forces are preparing for various contingencies to ensure the operation’s success while maintaining stability. The coming weeks will be marked by tension and emotion as families and the nation anticipate the return of those held captive, including seven Americans, in this prolonged conflict.

I'm not at all happy this deal is phased in, and apparently may end with some hostages unreleased. (I hope I'm reading it wrong.)

Apparently a reporter asked Biden directly if Trump shares credit for this, but it's a video (credited to CNN) and I won't click video links, so if someone else watches it and wants to share the reply, I'm interested. Just not interested enough to waste my time watching several minutes of video to find out what a 1-word answer would tell us.

I watched. The question was "who deserves credit for this, Mr. President, you or Donald Trump?" Biden was walking away from the podium, he stopped, turned back, smirked and said "is that a joke?" and then said good night and continued walking away. Honestly, I don't blame him for that response. Whether it's true or not. He had minutes earlier stated that he knew that this would have to be coordinated closely with the "incoming team" and that they therefore reached out to the "incoming team" to make sure everyone was speaking with the same voice because "that's what presidents do." Lots of shots fired in what appeared to be a fairly short conference. But I'm not going to drag the guy down on this one.

John Kirby says Biden, Trump worked as 'one team' in securing cease-fire deal: 'Plenty of credit to go around' | Fox News

White House national security communications adviser John Kirby said he is "confident" the Israel-Hamas cease-fire deal will be implemented after 467 days of war and says there is "plenty of credit to go around."

"We're not focused too much on the credit," Kirby told "The Story" on Wednesday. "As the president said, I mean, we approach this as one team, a team of Americans, to try to get Americans back home with their families. And that's what matters. I think there's plenty of credit to go around. And it's not just here in the United States... Egypt, Qatar, Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu, who made some courageous decisions throughout this negotiation, and there's plenty of credit to go around to everybody."

Kirby recognized President-elect Trump's incoming Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff as a key figure in brokering the deal.

"We worked on this as one team, as the American people would expect us to do," Biden's national security communications adviser stated.

"The president made it clear to us on the national security team that we needed to make sure that the Trump team, in particular Mr. Witkoff, were part and parcel and fully invested in everything we were doing because they were going to own it when we left office," Kirby revealed.

"Mr. Witkoff traveled to the region. He and Brett McGurk, our special coordinator for the Middle East, talked multiple times a day over the last week or so as we were getting down to the fine details and trying to get it over the finish line. Mr. Witkoff himself credited the work that he was able to enjoy by working with us."
I think the obvious remains obvious, regardless of snarks. This is an echo of the transition from Carter to Reagan.

There have been a flood of significant movements since Trump was elected and Mara Lago became the Versailles of the country. This afternoon I saw this headline, Arab Leaders Praise Trump for Accomplishing More in One Meeting Than Woeful Biden Did All Year – RedState (Mike Miller), which begins by noting some of those movements:
Talk about "hit the ground running."

President-elect Donald Trump has virtually redefined the pre-presidency more than any soon-to-be president in U.S. history. From corporation after corporation running away from DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) insanity to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's announcement that Facebook would kick its notorious "fact-checkers" to the curb in favor of free expression to now, an apparent breakthrough in hostage negotiations between Israel and Hamas, Trump and his team continue to amaze.

As reported by The Times of Israel on Wednesday under the headline "Arab officials: Trump envoy swayed Netanyahu more in one meeting than Biden did all year," a "tense Jerusalem sit-down led to breakthrough in talks, with Israel and Hamas agreeing in principle to hostage deal two days later [with] sides now finalizing implementation details."

As I type I have on the boob tube Old Joe giving his farewell speech, which began by taking all credit for the hostage agreement, and claiming to have kept the Trump team fully informed, bless his heart.

I don't much care, although I'm not going to like listening to the lefty media echoing this crap. The rest of his speech is as convincing as a Corn Pop story. Corn Pop was eaten by cannibals, y'know.

If Old Joe had any genuine successes to point to he wouldn't need to give a self-praising speech. Hopefully it will end soon.

Miller's report is largely based on a Times of Israel piece, Arab officials: Trump envoy swayed Netanyahu more in one meeting than Biden did all year | The Times of Israel
. . . A “tense” weekend meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and incoming Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff led to a breakthrough in the hostage negotiations, with the top aide to US President-elect Donald Trump doing more to sway the premier in a single sit-down than outgoing President Joe Biden did all year, two Arab officials told The Times of Israel on Tuesday.

Witkoff has been in Doha for the past week to take part in the hostage negotiations, as mediators try to secure a deal before Trump’s January 20 inauguration. On Saturday, Witkoff flew to Israel for a meeting with Netanyahu at the premier’s Jerusalem office.

During the meeting, Witkoff urged Netanyahu to accept key compromises necessary for an agreement, the two Arab officials on Monday told The Times of Israel on condition of anonymity. Neither Witkoff nor Netanyahu’s office responded to requests for comment.

On Monday night — two days after the Jerusalem meeting — Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams notified mediators that they accepted the hostage deal proposal in principle, the two officials said.

One of the Arab officials said that the three-phased hostage deal currently being finalized between Israel and Hamas is largely the same as the proposal that was proposed by Israel last May.

“A deal could have been reached much earlier, but both sides led to talks falling apart at various times,” the Arab official said.

The official rejected repeated assertions from the US that Hamas has been the only obstacle to a ceasefire, arguing that Israel has also thwarted talks over the past several months. The Arab official said Netanyahu walked away from the phased proposal he authorized in May, trying to instead prioritize the first phase of that offer so that Israel could resume fighting in Gaza immediately afterward. . . .

The Times of Israel (Jacob Magid) piece continues at length, with considerable detail about the agreement.

Meanwhile, the obvious remains the obvious.

According to Israeli sources, of the 33 hostages to be released, 10 are deceased. We'll see if that ends up being true.
May we raise children who love the unloved things - the dandelion, the worm, the spiderlings.
Children who sense the rose needs the thorn and run into rainswept days the same way they turn towards the sun...
And when they're grown and someone has to speak for those who have no voice,
may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things and be the one.

I read that the terrorists who murdered anyone were not going to be allowed back into Gaza, but exported to other countries like Turkey. That would involve a whole bunch of negotiations, and I don't know if I should trust that sort of thing at all.

They should probably be given a free trip to the Caribbean atop a small iceberg.

In my lifetime of memories, aside from 9/11, this may be one of the most horrific moments of history that I am aware of (i.e., the October attack and massacre).

I agree. We like to think we're better than that (as a species); we say things like, "that's not who we are." But it ain't so, Joe. We are capable of profound depravity and have acted out repeatedly.
