Porn star Lana Rhoades slams X-rated industry: ‘They should make it illegal’

Wow, If she isn't the stupidest gal on the planet, she has got to be in the top 5.

“For some reason I never comprehended that to do porn you actually have to have sex with people,” she said, claiming she had only been intimate with one person before making her industry debut.

In a recent video, the ex-porn star put the sportsman on blast, writing: “I swear to God I thought NBA players were nice guys. Next thing you know, I said, ‘I’m pregnant’ … And he told me to go f–k myself.”
    Lol.

I don't think I'd call her stupid. She's just been duped. It is a truly vicious industry that sucks in (no pun intended) these vulnerable teenaged or just-past teenaged girls. Now, if that's what you want to do with your life, then have at it and I wish you the best of success, but I've read story after story of these people (usually women, sometimes men) who say that they never really understood what they were truly getting into when they started this. They were drawn to money and "glamour" of being some sort of sex symbol like Marilyn Monroe or something, and then they just get discarded after a few years. It really is pretty insidious, and these are universally very young people who don't really have an understanding of the world yet.

In a way, it's like telling these high school kids that they're going to be NFL stars: they don't have to worry about their studies, just go play football. Then, at the end of the day, something like 0.2% ever make it to the draft even after a resounding college football career, and now they're out there with no meaningful education (because they just got passed on to keep the football program going), possibly having life-altering injuries, and it's not like they're going to go be an investment banker at Price-Waterhouse or whatever, because for somewhere between 12 and 25 years, they never learned to spell "cat," much less any sort of meaningful skill to use in the real world.

Now, I like watching football as much as the next guy, but in many cases, we're not doing these players any favors. We're turning a blind eye to the actual education that they're supposed to be getting, and I really don't care if that education is in international finance or welding: they're ultimately left out in the cold to be ditch-diggers after many years of supposed "teaching."

These young women (mostly) are left with much the same predicament: their careers are very short, no one tells them to plan for the future, they live the high life for a few years, and then they can barely run a McDonald's drive-thru once the ship that came in has left town.
It's been ten years since that lonely day I left you
In the morning rain, smoking gun in hand
Ten lonely years but how my heart, it still remembers
Pray for me, momma, I'm a gypsy now

Well put. Life is messy...plus, aren't we supposed to make our mistakes as new adults (great phrase, btw) so we learn from them and don't keep repeating the same ones as old adults?

"Sex workers" have a very rough row to hoe, and I doubt the vogueish campaign to normalize it is doing them any favors. Porn videos, social media and tattoos share a permanence that sometimes bites later on. I know a couple of women who were briefly exotic dancers, as they called it. I don't know any details, nor do I sense that it has dogged them, but neither, now old like me, has found a life partner successfully, and I wonder if there's a correlation. I know one couple who made a porn video early in their marriage, and I don't sense that it's anything more than an awkward family secret, but they're a mess in other ways, sort of a Jack and Diane pair ("two American kids, doing the best they can").

I take a very dim view of efforts to glamorize sex work. I don't see them happily raising children to follow their footsteps.

I'm sure some people have a pretty good idea of what they're getting into, and mistakenly think it will be "edgy" and that they are smart enough to use the industry instead of being used by it. They're not, but, as Adam pointed out, the same could be said of pro sports.

More, I suspect, are genuinely conned. Ambitions of being rich and famous can lead naïve young people to dismiss warning signals about people who promise them "modeling" or "acting" or "dancing" careers. Given a free choice, really, who would choose "sex work?" They probably told she have to be naked in some movies; well, some very famous legitimate actors have done that. By the time a recruit figures out that it's going to be all abusive sex, all the time, the producer has pictures they can send her parents or put on the internet, and she feels stuck.

                  Adam's right: it's a vicious industry.

I doubt anyone on here has the opinion that sex work is glamorous. I was pointing to what Celeste wrote and agreeing with it. People make mistakes and almost have consequences that follow. No matter how much they regretted what they've done (we've done...because even though everyone thinks they are above it all, we've all made mistakes), no matter how much they take responsibility for their actions, no matter that they've admitted they were wrong and changed their opinion, you'll still have people calling them stupid.

This now 26-year-old woman who was a 19-year-old teenager when she entered the porn world and stayed for 8 months was not stupid. Was she naive and extremely ignorant? Yes...but ignorance also applies to everyone here when it comes to certain things they don't know, don't understand or haven't experienced. Good grief, she admits her faults, has said that drugs and alcohol infest the industry and even goes to an extreme and says that the porn industry should be illegal. Shouldn't we all be agreeing with her instead of ridiculing her? Shouldn't we be supportive of her stance now, hoping she continues to mature and grow and maybe be an advocate against porn? Or should we just point fingers and ridicule?

If we want to have an honest discussion about porn, there's plenty to be said about it and its damaging and deadly effects on men, women, teens and children. It's not only teenage girls and women who fall for the glamorization of porn. Young males, 13 and up are racking up unsuccessful and failed relationships because of the rewiring of the paths within their brains by using porn. After that, we can move on to the relationship between porn and sex trafficking. It's gruesome and dare I say evil. But this need to take down this girl, informs and helps no one. I realize that might be hard to see from an ivory tower.

May we raise children who love the unloved things - the dandelion, the worm, the spiderlings.

Yes, everyone makes mistakes. And yes, we should applaud what she is doing now. But, I'm sorry, you didn't know that porn included sex? Or that and NBA player could be a rat?

Yes, I have made mistakes. But I have done nothing like this gal.

Maybe our world is fucked up now because we have forgotten how to shame someone that needs to be shamed.

OK, let's put this in terms that might be more understandable.

There is not a single person on this board or off it who hasn't done something stupid in their youth. I have, you have, Celeste has, scott has, Michele has. It's a part of growing up: you do stupid crap and learn from it.

Now, obviously a topic of current conversation is the grooming of children into believing that they're somehow trans. You don't accept that for a moment, and neither do I, but the reason why neither of us accept it is because we can see it for what it is: some adult, typically an "authority figure," who convinces that child to believe something that isn't true: that Johnny is actually Sally "trapped" in Johnny's body. These are young, impressionable children (or very young adults) who have been absolutely convinced of something even though it very obviously isn't true: Johnny has an outie, not an innie, but he's been led to believe that he should not believe his lyin' eyes.

Well, guess what? That's pretty much how it works in the porn industry. Jane is just convinced that all she has to do is appear in her bra and panties, and she'll become famous. Then she's convinced to take off her bra, to become famous and glamourous, just like those actresses in Hollywood. Then she just needs to take off her panties and show the world how beautiful she is. Then she just has to have a "little bit" of sex with someone, you know, to show how open-minded she is and that she can do something on screen. And in short order, she's got three guys penetrating every hole but her ears and nostrils. But she gets lots of money and adulation for it, so it's worth it, right? Jane is 19, sees herself making hundreds of times the amount of money that her high school peers made, and everyone surrounding her cheers her on as being beautiful and brave and adored by everyone around the world, just exactly what every teenaged girl wants. She just has to debase herself in just such a way, she only needs to think that she's "found her true self" by doing this, and that will somehow make her happy as she runs away from whatever daddy issues or whatever else she has.

Then, in four or five years, they're completely discarded, the money and the fame dry up, that whole acting career and being in the next Marvel movie never happens, and they realize that they have great regret for what they have done, irreparably, to themselves. Lana Rhodes will never, ever be able to somehow claw back whatever porn films were made of her. Same with a whole host of others before her. She will forever have to deal with the consequences of her decisions, coached by predators, when she was a teenager. She can never have a husband who doesn't know what she did, her family will always know what she did, and she can never live a life without that stain upon her.

Just like you (the Royal You) can never un-do what you've done to yourself when some adult convinced you that you should chop off your wee-wee or your breasts when you're 14 years old or whatever, these people have been led to believe a lie: that somehow they're going to be famous, get rich, stay rich, and have a life of happiness and luxury. There really is no difference between the grooming of young children into believing that they're trans and the grooming of these young women into performing on film. It's a different trajectory with a different goal, but the methodology is exactly the same at the end of the day.

And that's not stupid. That's being fooled by someone(s) who should really know better, and usually do, but go ahead with their plans because it's worth using some other human being to accomplish a goal.
It's been ten years since that lonely day I left you
In the morning rain, smoking gun in hand
Ten lonely years but how my heart, it still remembers
Pray for me, momma, I'm a gypsy now

Adam, do you people who muddle thru life? That are constant fuck-ups? That spend their money foolishly? Hell, my son works with a guy that swallowed a plastic bar dart on a bet. While you are correct that these people have been manipulated, you can also be damn sure that they are usually will convince themselves that they are doing what is right.

Like the girls that came out of the woodwork when Hugh Hefner died claiming they were "fooled" while they lived with him for years.

So, this debate is sorta like the chicken and the egg. Which came first, the stupidity or the manipulation?

Well, that's a fair question. With 20/20 hindsight, it's easy to say "well, they should have known better." But I could say the same about probably two dozen decisions in my life, and I'm betting you could, too. We all have a myopia of the moment, and it's difficult to get around that for most people, regardless of age. But without any doubt, younger people are far more easily manipulated than those who have been around the block a few times. Predators prey upon that, and that's the insidious part here.

I'm not about to say "go do porn for a few years and then see what it's like," nor am I about to say "you had all the warning signs and ignored them." The insidious part is that predators actually convince people that the warning signs don't mean what they actually say. That's what's actually different here. When you and I were growing up, something like this would have "Danger, Will Robinson!" written all over it, but now these people have convinced the vulnerable that the robot doesn't know what he's talking about.

And it's happening everywhere. It's been going on in schools (particularly universities) for decades: these people literally looked at bread lines in Soviet Russia and said "well, everyone is equal!" They look at some statue of some Confederate general somewhere and say "that's not fair because that means that we're all not the same." And they look at women and say "well, we'll just use them as disposable items because they have (allegedly) attained equality, and now we're on to something else." This Mirielle Whateverthehellhernameis who beat up a teenaged girl at UCSB several years ago is actually celebrated now for ... being a professor of pornography, claiming that it "empowers women."

It's hideous. Women and men are different. I don't hate women for being the "fairer sex," indeed just the opposite. But in the pursuit of "equality" (which is now conveniently re-named to "equity"), what we have done is absolutely destroy the goal that everyone was after in the first place.

And by the same token, taking advantage of young women who get made all sorts of promises that will never come true, we're only doing them harm as well. It's just like I told my brother the other night: you're not actually doing the panhandler any favors by giving him money: you're only prolonging the problem. Again: if you (the Royal You) want to have a career and a life in the porn industry, then have at it, and I wish you success and health (the latter likely is a tougher hurdle). But suckering someone in (as this Lana woman says she was; I have no idea who she is, so I have to take her at her word, but she's not the only one to say this) is indeed quite insidious.

There was a reason for chivalry. I say we return to it.
